Salisbury Crematorium

CLIENT: Salisbury City Council
VALUE: £2.1m
COMPLETED: 2014

SHA acted as architectural consultants for major extension and refurbishment works at the Grade II listed Salisbury Crematorium. The project, which involved the installation of mercury abatement equipment and the replacement of two existing cremators, also included the expansion and upgrading of the visitor waiting and welfare facilities as well as improvements to the main chapel, reception, administration and car park areas.

The building, which had been largely unaltered since its original construction in 1960 and sits in grounds designed by the renowned landscape architect Brenda Colvin, was subject to an eleventh-hour listing by English Heritage. Having already gained planning approval on behalf of Salisbury City Council, we subsequently secured the necessary listed building approvals following detailed negotiations with the city’s conservation department and English Heritage.
